The Devil's Quoits (OK0525)

United Kingdom (UK) > Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire | No container

History

Nearly 5,000 years ago, towards the end of the stone age, hunter-gatherer and early agrarian tribes built a circle of stones. It stood here, in a grassy plain probably first cleared for their sheep and goats. This construction, originally comprising 36 standing stones plus an additional stone standing outside, “pointing in”, stood at the centre of a network of over 60 ancient burial mounds across the Windrush Valley. Its purpose is uncertain: unlike some henge monuments, the stones do not seem to have been positioned with any astrological significance. Over the millennia that followed, though, it certainly saw varied use: bronze age settlers to the area added a central plinth stone, suggesting ritual uses, and there’s evidence that the outer ring mound may have been used for burials.

Unfortunately, like many of Britain’s ancient monuments, this henge did not survive intact through the ages. During the medieval period most of the stones were entirely removed, probably for use in other construction projects. In the Second World War most of the earthworks were levelled in order to establish an airfield at the site. After the war, the area was part of a quarry for gravel, and then when the pit was closed it began to be used as a landfill site: a purpose that the surrounding area still supports today, as you’ll doubtless notice as you approach!

Following archaeological work, however, the stone circle was able to be reconstructed in the early 2000s, leading to the monument you’ll see today. The current monument attempts to replicate what the area might have looked like at the time of the Roman expansion into Britain. Only one of the “original” stones remains: the others are all replacements from the surrounding area.

The name of the henge comes from a local legend. According to the story, a beggar and the Devil played a game of quoits (throwing a rope loop so it encircles a stone: a predecessor to games like horseshoes and hoopla). They played atop Wytham Hill, about 5.5km North-East of here. The Devil won by throwing these stones all the way here, and then casting his quoit around them despite the vast distance, and leaving the stones and the surrounding earthwork “ring” as a result.

Finding the cache

The coordinates will take you directly to the centre of the stone circle. Four possible trailheads are suggested, two of which (including the closest) have car parking available. For the most part, the trailheads are not well-signposted and you’ll need to do your own navigation. Please respect any signs and fences and stick to the path: some of the surrounding areas contain former quarry or current landfill operations and trespassing could be dangerous.

In addition to logging the cache, you'll need to contact the cache owner with answers to the following two questions. Logs for which answers aren't forthcoming will be deleted:

Count the stones.
How many stones are standing in the circle today?

Point to the outlier.
One stone stands outside the circle, almost “pointing in” towards the centre – let’s call this the outlier.
Stand in the centre of the circle, facing the entrance/information board. In what direction is the outlier relative to you?
(Relative clock directions e.g. “7 o’clock”, “10 o’clock” etc or degrees are acceptable, but absolute directions e.g. “West” are not.)

Consider including in your log a photograph of yourself at the site, but please ensure that the photograph can't be used to answer the questions without visiting!

Take a seat at the posted coordinates and you'll see six numbers to complete the gaps in the final coordinates: N 51° _ _ . _ _ _', W 1° _4 . _ _ _'.

This unusually-shaped cache is large enough to hold multiple travel bugs and tradables. The building nearby was a pub from 1841 until around 2011/2012, and lends its name, in part, to the name of this cache. As for the rest of the name: you'll figure that out when you get there!

Please use stealth when accessing the cache and be sure to close it fully when you're done.

Getting there

This is not a cache-and-dash. The car park of the nearby former pub is now a private driveway: do not park there. Parking is available about 200m South in the bay of the former bus stop, or at the Village Hall just a little further.

This cache is easily reached by bike, on foot, or on horseback. Take care near the main road, especially with kids: the posted limit is 20mph but sometimes drivers are "still slowing down" to that speed as they approach from the North.

You must check out the Firing Notices before entering the ranges. DO NOT ENTER THE RANGE WHEN THE RED FLAGS ARE FLYING. Please ensure that you have the correct clothing and map & compass (and know how to use them). Please do NOT rely solely on your GPS.

I would like to thank the Dartmoor National Park Authority for their kind permission to place this cache, which has been placed according to the geocaching guidelines.

United Kingdom (UK) > Essex | Micro

Downham is the largest of the three South Hanningfield Parish Wards. School Road is the heart of the village, featuring the pond which is part of the highway drainage system but can still be used for watering animals. Opposite the pond are the Jubilee Gardens and village sign, commemorating the Queen’s Silver and Gold Jubilees, with the village hall nearby.

Downham’s origins trace back to Roman times, although it’s not mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The history of Downham involves three main manors: Fremnells (linked to Guy Fawkes), Barn Hall, and Downham Hall, owned by notable families like the Tyrell, De Vere, and De Beauvoir. In 1934, Downham merged into the newly formed South Hanningfield Parish.

To the south is the church of Saint Margaret of Antioch, built on a Saxon church site after the Norman invasion. With its Norman embattled tower, it stands on Essex’s second highest point, offering views to the Thames Estuary and Kent coast. The church, which suffered a fire in 1977, has been restored, and features an 18th-century Dovecote and one of England’s oldest Field Maple trees. Downham Hall, now a remnant of the original manor, is also located here.

Downham hosts the Essex Wildlife Centre on Hawkswood Road, providing access to Hanningfield Reservoir’s wildlife, along with a shop and visitor assistance. The village, along with Ramsden Heath and South Hanningfield, boasts well-maintained public footpaths and rights of way for countryside exploration.

Abbey Fauna (Virtual) (OK051E)

United Kingdom (UK) > Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Bristol/Bath area | No container

Early one morning, I was walking through Bath when I saw an artist at work. Not so unusual, but she wasn't painting on paper, or indeed on any portable medium, and I wasn't sure if she was supposed to be there. I wish that I'd stopped to find out more, but my British reserve kicked in; I just filed the memory and continued on my way.

Fast forward to August 2024, when I was in Rome, waiting for a train. I received a message out of the blue from Denmark, from someone I'll call Min. I don't know how best to describe Min: friend seems a bit too familiar, as I've never met her in real life, yet acquaintance seems a bit too distant, given some of our shared, albeit time-separated, experiences. Probably nearer the former than the latter, but perhaps I'm over-thinking it.

Min was bringing my attention to the Jejune Institute in the States. Later, back in the UK, I followed this up with a few hours of interesting streaming: a documentary (free) and some inspired-by-fact fiction (paywall). All this material lodged with me and, sometime later, my Fredwynn-like memory palace kicked in and I recalled the artist painting with divine nonchalance in Bath. I have since learned that she was not called Eva or Clara, but Miriam.

Part of divine nonchalance involves a heightened attention of one's surroundings and noticing odd things hidden in plain sight. Abbey Fauna is an open invitation to you to practise some of these skills. Unfortunately, there are no flyers, rented offices, radio or phone messages (watch the streaming references for context), but I hope that you will at least have a diverting half-hour.

Take a look at the following diagram. I wouldn't describe it as a map exactly, and it is not to scale, but it should make enough sense when you are physically at the acorn.

There follow two sets of questions. All the initial answers are intended to be easy, but then you need to convert each answer into a single letter or digit from the diagram, using some divinely nonchalant fieldwork. (The fieldwork is essential! Do not, for example, just try the first letter of the answer, or any other arbitrary scheme.) Listed strictly in the order of the questions, these letters and digits will form two code strings: let's label them Code-E and Code-H. (Note that on completion neither of them will spell out anything meaningful.)

The Easy and Often Harder labels below do not refer to the difficulty of the questions, but to the relative difficulty of obtaining the letters or digits of their respective code strings. Early in the morning (i.e. before the shops open), later in the evening, or anytime during inclement weather, they are equally easy to obtain.

Since the Jejune Institute does not wish you to go home unfulfilled, there are two options. These are not either/or options and you are encouraged to do both, but depending on your timing there will be occasions when Often Harder becomes Impracticably Hard (unless you are tenacious, persistent, and brave).

The physical version of this cache (see here) uses only Code-E (from the Easy fauna questions). The virtual version of this cache uses both Code-E and Code-H (from the Often Harder fauna questions), simply concatenated in that order. Note that this is not simply two cache types for the price of one. They start out from the same trunk, but then branch, and the virtual cache is usually harder, despite its not having a physical stage. I acknowledge that I am slightly playing with the form, but then again the Jejune Institute is known for being disruptive.

Note that during the Christmas Market season, I expect that neither cache will be possible, so there is likely to be a temporary disabling during that period. Go shopping instead. (Or avoid Bath altogether as it gets very busy!)

This listing is for the VIRTUAL CACHE. Answer the Easy fauna questions AND the Often Harder fauna questions. Use fieldwork to obtain both Code-E and Code-H, then join them together in that order (21 characters long, case insensitive) and enter it into this cache's bespoke checker (click here), which will give you further instructions to log the virtual find.

Note that an average D-rating has been estimated for this cache based on Code-H, ranging from D2 (quiet periods) to D5 (peak periods). A halfway value of D3.5 was arbitrarily chosen, although it is more like Schrödinger's Cat and will be one or the other; in practice the timing of a typical tourist visit will correspond to D5.

Easy fauna questions:

Often Harder fauna questions:

Enjoy your nonchalant searching, whether divine or not.

The first half of the walk goes along the towpath (the name comes from the horses which used to tow cargo boats along the Cam), and the second half of the trail comes back along the other side of the river which is a bit more muddy in the winter.

I hope you enjoy the caches (hopefully they will still be there!)
