There are only walls left standing of the fort kitchen and the cache is placed in one of these narrow walls.
The Southern Fort No.1 is one of two forts constructed at Berry Head between 1795 and 1805, during the wars with France. Guns positioned on the headland defended Torbay from invasion and the forts protected these guns from inland attack/
