Ever since reading “Ring of Bright Water” by Gavin Maxwell I have wondered where he lived when writing his book about life in the Highlands with his otters. I remember taking clues from the book and pouring over maps trying to locate the elusive Camasfearna, the fictitious name he gave his house somewhere near the Sound of Sleat. All this happened back in the 1960s and it was not until today that I looked up the site on the Internet and set off to find the house that had caught my imagination so many years ago.
It is possible, if you plan your visit at low tide, to walk to a few of the islands and enjoy a picnic on one of the exposed beaches. The cache itself requires a short scramble of about 5 metres up a rock outcrop. There is parking for about 4 or 5 cars on the main road next to the gate. N57 10.418 W005 40.079
The route to the cache is well described in the Walk Highland website.
