Whittington Village

The usually quiet Cotswold village of Whittington is a small pretty place, but one steeped with history.

Channel 4s Time Team found three Roman Villas whilst excavating for one of their programmes. It is thought that some of the stone from one of the villas could have been used for the building of Whalley farmhouse in the village.

Stone has been commercially mined in the area since the 1600's and surface evidence of it can be clearly seen whilst walking the footpath through farmland to the north west of the village. Limestone was extracted from underground workings and this was used to build Regency buildings in the nearby large town of Cheltenham, and also used in the building of the Houses of Parliament.

During WWII the village was home to German PoW's and Jewish refugees, who worked alongside each other growing crops to feed our nation.

The village is home to some interesting features and buildings including an Elizabethan Manor and a Medieval Church.

As noted above, the village is usually a very quiet place, but the day of their annual fete is an exception. Usually held on the first Saturday of September, the village comes to life with fun, games, music and dance. Whilst a field is opened for parking that day, the event is popular and parking can still be difficult unless you arrive early.

The Cache

Please park with consideration to residents of the village, along the road near the posted coordinates.

The simple tasks you need to do to complete this virtual are twofold:

1. Take and post a photo of your GPSr with the gothic styled feature at the posted coordinates.

2. From the posted coordinates make your way to N 51° 53.529 W 001° 59.437. On route a couple of features to look out for are The Old School House and opposite that is an 18th century barn. Once at the coordinates you will find a small padlocked metal gate. Look through the gate straight in front of you, the name of what lays beyond is to be found scribed into the sloped block work roof. Underneath that on another block there is a further inscription consisting of a row of letters above four numbers. The password for this cache is the third and fourth letter followed by the four numbers. You will need a good torch to see the inscriptions in the darkness beyond the gate.
