Of course, just as Liam Devlin’s role was essential to the Norfolk plot, a plan of this complexity and derring-do also needed an inside man. History tells us little of this character, however. All we know is this: he worked for the Lord of the Manor as a chauffeur, and presumably this is the reason he was known in the operation simply by the code name der Fahrer.

In addition to local reconnaissance before the drop, we now believe that he was directly involved in transporting the Eagles during their mission; his employment could have facilitated this. When the mission went pear-shaped, however, we have already seen that members of the team dispersed in different directions. Der Fahrer was no exception, but having a vehicle and local knowledge meant that he could spread his movements more widely. He knew of a couple of places where he could lie low, but all the time he was trying to work his way back to rejoin his comrades as, with his cover blown, he wanted to return with them to his adopted fatherland.

Unlike the Eagles, der Fahrer didn't have access to sophisticated cryptographic equipment and knowledge. He did, however, have a less secure coding resource, which he hoped would keep him one step ahead of anyone who came across his transmissions, at least in the short term.
