About SideTracked

We have Motorway Mayhem. We have A-Road Anarchy (cos there aren’t
many Motorways in Wales!). But what about public transport
users?

SideTracked Caches are intended to provide quick Cache-and-dashes
at Train Stations. It is hoped this idea will spread across the
country in the same way as the MMs….but if hiding one PLEASE BE
SENSIBLE and remember that in this day and age, public transport is
under greater scrutiny than ever before, so, although these caches
should quick and easy grabs, PLEASE don’t place a Cache where it
could cause alarm!!!

Sidetracked - Steam's Up - Buckfastleigh

The Buckfastleigh, Totnes and South Devon Railway line opened on 1 May 1872. It was worked from the outset by the larger South Devon Railway Company until 1 February 1876 when this was amalgamated into the Great Western Railway, who continued to operate the line.
The Buckfastleigh company was amalgamated into the Great Western Railway in 1897. This in turn was nationalised into British Railways on 1 January 1948. The line closed to passengers in November 1958 but goods traffic continued until 7 September 1962.
It was re-opened as the "Dart Valley Railway", a heritage railway, on 5 April 1969, the opening ceremony being performed by Dr Richard Beeching.
The South Devon Railway Trust took over the running of the line on 1 January 1991.

In 1971 Buckfastleigh became the terminus of the line when the route beyond the station was closed to allow improvements to the A38 road. Workshops have since been provided for restoring and repairing the locomotives and rolling stock used on the railway.
The goods shed has been converted to a railway museum and this is the home of Tiny the last remaining broad gauge locomotive.
