The purpose of the “Lest we forget….” series is to take a moment out of our busy lives to remember those who fell fighting for our country.
At the corner of Calverley Park Gardens and Landsdowne Road, there is a drinking fountain and water trough. In reality, it’s actually a memorial / monument to a Lieutenant Colonel dating back over one hundred years!
The sad truth is, no one actually knows for sure who the named soldier is, or their link to the town. It’s also not clear who actually commissioned and erected the monument, although there is some speculation over whether it was a magistrate who lived in the town.
This monument is the reason the “Lest we forget….” series is being created. No-one knows who this soldier was, what happened to him or why he was important enough to have this dedication. I find it amazing that someone can be forgotten so easily, so here is your opportunity to take a moment to remember an unknown soldier who fought for our country.
