Well, in these strange times three phrases are being talked about by everyone, so as I done a detour from my work commitments, I came to Pendrift Down to 'self-isolate' and definitely do 'social-distancing' being just me, myself and I in this wonderful lonely valley. What a great cache in a great site, coming down via the Jubilee Rock. Yesterday I managed a wonderful afternoon lonesome walk on Dartmoor and today I will cherish this place in my memory, as very special, due to the Government ordering Britain into 'lockdown' for up to three weeks, this very evening! My outdoor life this spring/summer is going to be VERY different and rather frustrating, but I'll keep calm and carry on!!!

I was out finishing off the South Penquite trail and a few other geocaches in the area and was not too far from this one so decided to go for it. Parked at the start of the fotpath and decended into the De Lank Valley. It was quite boggy in the valley itself, but the going got better as I headed up the rocky outcrop to the viewpoint. A bit of a zig-zag route, then around the summit to the cache.

The cache was REALLY obvious in its hide, so I have added a little more leaf litter to cover it a bit more. Some kids have built a camp in the wooded part, and I'm surprised the cache hasn't been muggled. They've either not found it (yet), or they know it's there and are being completely respectful of it's pupose Undecided .

Cache and contents in really good shape.

Mrs Spacebat & I were staying for a few nights in Blisland and had been out for the day. Mrs S opted to stay in for a while before we went out for dinner, so I set off, not really knowing what terrain to expect, to find this cache!!! Parked at Pendrift as it is just up the road from Blisland. Once at the bottom of the hill, on the valley floor, I could see that the cache was back up at the top of the hill. I tried taking a short cut, by heading into the trees, only to be confronted by load of huge rocks! Not a good idea to try climbing up those.

Heading round the hill a bit further, I soon found the path that led up the hill. However, it went nowhere to GZ, so I had to follow animal tracks to the rocks at the top. Finally, finding the cache iteslf was a doddle, as I went straight to it, signed the log and headed back down, across the valley and up again to the car at Pendrift. Phew, that was a bit of a slog, but well worth it. And mine is the first log this year. Will there be any more, I wonder?

T4TC, Spacebat

P.S. Saw a light-brown rabbit on the way back up.

Found this cache, my third find of an open cache, couldnt find the parking location so found a disused gateway and parked there, opening in hedge lead us down tot he valley, very popular spot as saw quite a few people on the walk down tot he cache, once in the location found easily, was a little uncovered, so rehide much more camoed when i left, took a pack of playing cards and left a charity bracelet and some makeup samples. Not the kind that will leak into the cache though. Lovely area, will def have to visit again when i have more time. Thanks for bringing me here.

Found as a Terracache in August '08 :

' I tried to park at the suggested co-ordinates but someone had beaten me to it and there wasn't enough room left without blocking gateways. I drove along towards Delford Bridge and parked in a lay-by near a Y junction. Glad I did as this took me by the Jubilee Rock which I hadn't visited before. After a brief visit I made my way to the cache. Fortunately the previous visit wasn't too long ago and the path through the bracken was quite negotiable. Found the box after a short search and signed log. Very neat hidey hole!

Then went on a little further to admire the views from the top rock. Thanks for a very good cache - most enjoyable and more new ground covered. '

Logging this on Christmas Eve, having found it on 7th July in VERY different weather to that which we are experiencing at present Laughing.

I rode over here on my motor-bike that morning, having spent the night in a B & B near Start Point. The main purpose of the day's caching was to be Garrow Tor and Brown Willy, but I came here as a warm up.

And what a warm up! When perusing the maps before I left home I had completely misjudged what this one would be like. Despite being a very much shorter walk, in terms of sheer grunt effort it probably exceeded Brown Willy. Deep bogs, a lack of paths, and dense bracken with brambles mixed in completely concealing the next foothold, made it really hard work on a hot morning. It does seem possible, from reading other logs on TerraCaching, that there might be an easier way in and out. But I didn't find it Laughing. When I got back to the motor-bike I was exhausted, but I still had Garrow Tor and Brown Willy to do Laughing.

Now, reading the above, you may get the impression that I didn't like this cache. Nothing could be further from the truth Laughing. Stunning views, an amazing hiding place, and a real challenge makes this a top cache and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I took the camo plastic box and left a torch in its place. The camo box is now an OpenCache in Petersham Park, which is just placed on the ground under a bush and has a spoiler locating it to 3 feet, but it is such a good camo job that it took me 15 minutes to find it again!

Thanks for a really great cache. The only reason I haven't already put it on my list of recommendations is that on OpenCaching you are allowed to recommend so few, and I have found so many good caches, that I have to "spend" them very carefully. It may well be that I come back later and make it a recommendation, it certainly deserves one.

Rgds, Andy

Found whilst it was a Terracache, and really pleased to see it 'open' to a wider set of cachers here. This was my log on TC.com ...

What an excellent cache - and a superb hidey-hole. Future seekers please note - You won't see the cache until you're right on top of it.

I'm sure there's a sensible route to the cache site - and I'm also sure I didn't take it :-).

The bracken was high and wet. I got soaked through, socks were saturated, boots squelching, glasses misting up. BUT I found it !!

A lovely valley, no doubt it would be even better in sunny weather.

A nice big ammo box, and lots of goodies inside. Just took the FTF prize (thanks) and signed the log (hope I didn't get it too wet).

TFTC,
Paul
