I found two servicemen called Cheesman listed here, and as a friend's name is spelled this way I tried to find out more. I drew a blank so it will have to be option 2.

I have taken a photograph of the thing that struck me most about this memorial - the carpet of snowdrops and crocuses that surrounded it. If the c/o deems this unsuitable, I also have a photograph of the column.
