Sir Cloudesley Shovell was the Admiral of the Fleet and a well-known, well-respected hero of the late 17th / early 18th century.
His career came to a tragic end when his ship, "The Association", and three other ships were wrecked just off the Isles of Scilly in the autumn of 1707. Altogether nearly 2000 sailors were drowned in one of the greatest disasters in British maritime history, primarily caused by the great navigational problem of that time - The difficulty of determining accurate Longitude.
Sir Cloudesley's body was washed up at Porthellick Cove where you will find a modest memorial. The mystery is in the legend surrounding the tragedy which recounts that Sir Cloudesley was in fact alive when he was found on the beach by a local woman but she murdered him for the fabulous emerald ring he was wearing. This murder only came to light 30 years later when the woman made her deathbed confession to a clergyman and gave him the ring to be returned to the family. This legend is central to the plot of a good mystery novel by Rober Goddard, "Name to a face".
As you look at the memorial it's worth remembering how we now take accurate navigation for granted, with the aid of our trusty GPS receiver at our side.
