Beschrijving EN

The Red Lodge is thought my many to be one of Bristol's hidden gems. Built in 1580 as the lodge house for the Great House, which once stood on the site of the present Colston Hall. It was subsequently added to in Georgian times.

The lodge has had many uses over the time, with probably one of it's most useful being the very first reform school for delinquent girls, when it was purchased by Lord Byron's widow and gifted to Mary Carpenter, one of the originators of the Reformatory system for poor girls and a pioneer of philanthropic work.

In 1948, the lodge passed into the care of Bristol City Council who have operated it as a museum ever since.

The Red Lodge currently has some interesting opening hours, but if you do chose to visit, then please do not fail to visit the Lodge's secret garden.

To log this cache you need to complete TWO simple tasks:

1. Locate the nearby plaque on the wall and answer the following question: “What was the profession of James Cowles Prichard?” Enter this 11 letter word into the “Password” box in CAPITAL letters.

2.Post a photo of yourself, or your GPSr, standing in front of the red door to the Red Lodge.

Congratulations to Amberel on the FTF.
