Description EN
The second of the series tracing parts of the Great Northen Railway.  Relauched April 2011 as an OC only virtual cache.
Located in the Erewash valley this Grade 2 listed structure is one of only two of it's type in the UK. The adjacent area is a SSSI with a rare type of orchid being found here along with newts, and a varity of birlife including Kingfishers around the river.
The caching area PMR comms channel is channel 2.
The cache is located near Bennerley viaduct a large wrought iron structure built in 1877 to carry the Great Northern Railway Derbyshire Extension onwards to Derby from Nottingham via Bulwell, Kimberley, Awsworth, Ilkeston, West Hallam and Breadsall. The route is still visible on the OS map if you look carefully although it does break up around the M1.

The viaduct is now owned by Sustrans hopefully with a view to making it part of the  Derby to Nottinghan path that is already up and running as far as Breadsall.

Approaches can be made from the Erewash Canal (best) or from the road that crosses the valley (you can use the disused road that runs adjacent to the path). Or if you know the area you may know an alternative route from other paths that cross the old Bennerley coal grading plant from the old Nottingham Canal.

This is an ex industrial area that is slowly being taken back to nature, so please do not be surprised if you see signs of municipal neglect, the biodiversity is increasing here and will continue to do so with positive support.

You will find a useful vantage point from which to view the viaduct near the coordinates.

This is a virtual cache, ie there is no container at the location.  However, you do need to visit the location to obtain the passsword to log your 'find'.

The password for logging is: The second word of the top line of the sign near the coordinates.

Please do NOT post the password in your logs.

Happy Caching!
