Description EN

The listed co-ordinates are for the middle of Shortwood Common. To find this cache you need to visit four of the notice boards dotted around the boundary. These boards provide interesting historical and botanical information about the common. I have listed the notice board co-ordinates, but if you stand in the middle you can see them.

You need to find the answers to these questions.

"Estovers" is one of several different rights that a commoner may hold, along with Turbary, Piscary and Pannage. In what year is a man shown exercising his right of Estovers? 1ABC.

One of the notice baords shows a variety of environments that feature on the common. "Open Water", "Reedbeds", "Muddy Margins" and "Trees" are DEFG.

In what year was Henry Stiles sentenced to death for stealing a horse from the common? 1HJK. I was really quite shocked at how recent this was. And how old was he? LM.

Stealing geese appears to be a lesser crime, for which the penalty was merely public whipping! In what year did someone steal Mr. Watson's geese? 1NPQ. How many geese and how many ganders were in the sack? This is R and S.

About how many hundred householders have commoner's rights? T

The Little Whirlpool Ramshorn Snail hasn't been seen since? 1UV0s.

From which year do the bylaws still stand? 1WXY.

Which trees are pollarded? Z is number of letters, including final s.

The location of the cache is N51 (P-N)(V-K).(F-D)(T+J)(C-S) W000 (L)(U-M)(X-Q)(Z-G)(H-R)

Parking is available in Shortwood Avenue to the North East, Leacroft to the South West, or even on the A30 London Road to the North, though this involves crossing the main road.

There are horses and cows on the common, so dogs should be kept on a lead.
